Poet, essayist, playwright, and teacher, Elizabeth Alexander was born in 1962 in Harlem, New York, and was raised in Washington, D.C. As a child she studied ballet at St. Mark's Dance School at St. Mark's Episcopal Church and attended Sidwell Friends School.

Editors Note: The PA editorial collective has had some interesting exchanges on Pinker's new book, even before most had read it! One of Pinker's virtues in both this and previous writing is his ability to stimulate thoughtful and provocative debate about very important matters. While a materialist in philosophy and scientific outlook, Pinker is a bit clueless on Marxism (there is not much evidence that he has read much of it), and on the entire subject of the role of class in social theory. However, he is a very influential and widely read intellectual.
