Obama Reaffirms Commitment to Closing Guantánamo

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 12 (acn) US President-elect Barack Obama has reaffirmed his commitment the closing the prison at the US Naval Base his country illegally maintains at Guantánamo Bay, in the southeastern region of the Cuban archipelago.

Nevertheless, the next US president pointed out that to implement this decision will take time, Granma newspaper reports on Monday.

During an interview with the ABC television network, in reference to the closing of this facility, Obama said it’s harder than many people think.

'I believe it will take some time, and our legal teams are working on consultations with our national security apparatus,” added the president-to-be.

However, Obama, who will assume his post on January 20, assured that he will close this prison, opened by President George W. Bush to accommodate foreign prisoners.

'I don’t want to be ambiguous about this. We will close the Guantánamo jail and we want to be sure that the procedures we’ll use respect our Constitution,' he stressed.

Torture committed against detainees there caused strong condemnation in the United States and the international community.

One of the methods arousing most rejection was simulated drowning, known as water boarding, which even led to an investigation by the Senate although the White House defended this practice.
