People's Poetry: To be an American

IMG17

Here is a poem for American workers as we celebrate May Day.  The international workers' holiday was, after all, born in the USA.

To be an American

Is the best American the one who hoards the most wealth

Is the best American the one who sends our jobs away

And forces more and more of us to live in desperation

Or is the best American the one who struggles for

The promise of America, the promise of life, liberty

And the pursuit of happiness and a better life for all

Is the best American the one who gambles with our pensions,

Loses, then says our promised pensions are too high

Is the best American the one who disdains us workers

And at every chance tries to steal all possible from us

Or is the best American the one who knows

We all do better when we all do better

Is the best American the meanest or the most compassionate

Is the best American the one who gives not a damn for our kids

Or is the best American the one who loves the children of our land
