a very late Marxist IQ for this week by Norman Markowitz

Here is a late Marxist IQ for the week.  I will try to focus on current events, not so much on Marxist theory or even on history

1. Toyota  registered significant profits this quarter is the largest automible corporation in the world, having replaced General Motors long ago.  Many Marxist economists  have long seen its rise in the second half of the twentieth century as

    a. a result of Japan's low military spending  and Toyota/s and focus on products for the consumer market while General Motors received extra profits from the Pentagon

    b. a  higher level of job security for its employees than General Motors

    c.  It's early stress fuel efficiency and auto longevity while General Motors ignored both and

        stressed advertising to create high turnover of low quality products

    d.  all of the above

 

2, Based on his writings on British imperialism in the 1850s and 1860s, Karl Marx would in looking at the situation in Syria focus on

   a. support for the Assad government as fighters against imperialism

   b. support for U,S, NAT0 forces intervention in the name of defending human rights

   c.  a call for socialist revolution in both Syria, the Middle East, and the U.S. NAT0 bloc countries

   d. a call for the working class of the U.S. NAT0 bloc countries to both oppose military intervention by their governments and to support the struggle of the working class of Syria against the Assad regime

 

3. This Sunday the New York Times has a long magazine  article ""The Last Refuge of Radical America"by Jonathan Mahler., writing in the style of a minor league Tom Wolfe,  Predictably, the article

 a. caricatures the Occupy Movement  with NIxonesque  stereotypes of pot smoking slogan shouting people afro hairdo utopians

b, presents a reasoned analysis of  rise of youth poverty, general economic inequality, and public sector decay that has produced the movement

c. Identifies with the struggle of the 1% against the 99%

d.  Sees the movement as a maneuver of the Obama administration to counter-act the Republican right

 

4. Sticking for a moment with the New York Times, some Communist, Socialist and left intellectuals used to joke in the 1930s especially that it was

   a. in favor of Democracy without profit sharing

   b. the secular edition of the Wall Street Journal

   c. Sympathetic to democratic struggles the further away they were from the U.S

   d. all of the above

 

5.  If Karl Marx was around this week watching Mitt Romney's foibles, he would, given his analysis of  class relations and capitalist politics, conclude

a. That large capitalists should not waste time and money seeking the political offices that they pay more qualified individuals to hold had serve their class interests.

 b. That Romney's understanding of history, government, world civilizations is above the level of most citizens

c. That Romney is proof that the accumulation of great wealth brings with it great wisdom

d. That Romney might seek a career in popular entertainment
