Video clips on the African-American Freedom Struggle and U.S. History, 1850-1877 by Norman Markowitz

N ext Thursday evening I will teach a class on the history of the African-American people.  This  class, the second of four, will deal with the period 1850-1877.  The first class taught by Jarvis Tyner, dealt with the period of the American Revolution and the early republic
Below I have l presented clips from a number of excellent documentaries dealing with the period.  While the links are for the students, they of course are open to everyone and everyone can learn from them

The first clip deals with Harriett Tubman, the escaped slave, militant abolitionist and pioneer women's rights activist.  The second deals with John Brown and the attempt to launch a general slave rebellion, beginning with the Harpers Ferry raid.  The third deals with Thad Stevens, the most important revolutionary abolitionist leader
The fourth, which is a clever comedy cartoon, deals with Sarah Palin, representing the views of contemporary ultra-right Republicans, debating with Abraham Lincon over the causes of the Civil War.  The fifth deals powerfully with the rise of the KKK and its war of terror against the struggle to democratize the defeated Confederate States.
The sixth deals with the election of 1876 and its significance. The last deals with a parallel development, the mini "Red Scare" of the 1870s against the "Molly Maguires" in the Pennsylvania coal fieds/
