Gold Star Families for Peace: Relatives of Dead US Soldiers Slam Bush over Iraq War

6-15-05,12:30pm

Washington, Jun 15 (Prensa Latina) The leader of the US organization Gold Star Families for Peace has slammed President George W. Bush for the illegal and unjust the invasion of Iraq.

The GSFP is made up of members of American families who have lost their loved ones in Iraq and it is headed by a mother -Cindy Sheehan of Vacaville, California- whose son Army Specialist Casey Austin Sheehan was killed last year in Sadr City, Baghdad.

They believe their loved ones died needlessly, senselessly, and avoidably in the aggression against Iraq.

The GSFP head accuses Bush of lying to the nation about a war that consumed tens of billions of dollars and claimed more than 1,700 American lives.

Sheehan took part at Monday´s anti-war rally in Lexington at the Red Mile, which was organized by the Clergy and Laity Network and co-sponsored by dozens of liberal religious organizations.

The GSFP organization plans to meet with Congress members on Thursday to seek their support for a Resolution of Inquiry into the so-called Downing Street Memo, which they say is a 'smoking gun' and validation that the invasion of Iraq was based on prefabricated intelligence.

Members of Gold Star Families for Peace and Military Families Speak Out, an organization of over 2,200 military families who are opposed to the Iraq war, also want to deliver a petition demanding Bush to tell the truth about the justifications for and the lead-up to the invasion.
