Port au Prince, Jun 5 (Prensa Latina) At least 25 people died when police agents of the Haitian transitional government raided Bel Air and other neighborhoods in this capital, local sources assured Sunday.
The police actions targeted Bel Air and other towns for being considered strongholds of supporters of the return of overthrown constitutional President Jean Bertrand Aristide. Witnesses revealed police agents burned down several houses and shot at people.
Meantime, human rights organizations reiterated accusations against Haitian security forces for the arrest of several members of the Lavalas Party -founded by Aristide- as well as executions and tortures.
In the last few weeks, the Blue Helmet and repressive forces in this country have intensified actions against Aritide´s supporters, justifying them as an attempt to stabilize the complex panorama ahead of this year´s elections.
