The Coming Economic Crises
Recently Louis Uchitelle presented an economic analysis of the US deficit (NYT 'Business Day' 9-18-04). Marxists should take note of a possible sudden collapse of the US economy that may well threaten the existence of the international capitalist system. Uchitelle talked with C. Fred Bergsten, director of the Institute for International Economics, who thinks the deficit is a 'disaster in the making.'

Deflation reduces the employment opportunities in such an economy, especially within the rural sector, a phenomenon that has occurred in India in the period of neo-liberal reforms, notwithstanding the claims about high growth.

'Globalisation' is the term under which imperialism presents itself in its current phase. The term however is a misnomer, since its implicit suggestion, that the degree of freedom of commodity and capital flows of the present epoch is something unprecedented in the history of capitalism, is not tenable.

Oil Prices And The World Economy
The past months have witnessed soaring oil prices in international markets, which have come on top of increases in the previous three years. In the third week of August world trade prices of crude oil nearly touched $50 per barrel before settling somewhat lower. But further increases are not ruled out in the near future.
