Chinese President Reasserts Opposition to Independence of Taiwan

Beijing, Mar 4 (Prensa Latina) Chinese President Hu Jintao reasserted here Friday that his country will keep on making efforts to reach the peaceful reunification of China, but without permitting the independence of Taiwan.

Hu Jintao, Head of State and Secretary General of the Chinese Communist Party (CPCh), talked about the topic before a group of delegates attending to the annual session of the Chinese People's Political Consulting Conference (ChPPCC) in representation of Taiwan, which started Thursday.

'We will keep on making our greatest efforts, with our greatest sincerity, searching for peaceful reunification, but we will never tolerate the independence of Taiwan, nor allow separatist forces to split Taiwan from our homeland,' he stated.

In this way, Hu Jintao responded to the attacks which have made people think of a law project against separatism, which has been written and should wait for the approval of the Parliament in the Saturday session.

One of the objectives of the law project is to stop the activities by the forces which promote the independence of Taiwan.

As Hu Jintao said, in the last years, big and complicated changes have been registered in the island, and intensification of the separatist forces´ actions have affected the peaceful development and relations between the two sides.

'If we don't oppose and stop the separatist forces, they will become a threat for the Chinese national sovereignty and integrity, and will destroy all the possibilities to materialize the peaceful reunification,' Hu Jintao said.

In 1949, after the foundation of the People's Republic of China, leaders of the defeated regime found shelter in Taiwan, and with political, economic and military support of the US, formed a government that rejected the island´s belonging to China.

From then on, the Chinese authorities have insisted on the fact that Taiwan is part of China.

Until 2000, representatives of Kuomintang party, which accepted the principle of one only China ruled the island. But after the arrival to power of President Chen Shui-bian, tension has been increased.

As a consequence of the defeat of Chen´s party in the legislative elections, some signals for separatism rose up in January and February, so the climate is still tense.
