Havana, April 8 (Prensa Latina).- Cuba´s production of bio-technological areagents to test for HIV-AIDS constitutes a major contribution to the scientific battle against that disease..

The research on sero-positive and sick people at the Pedro Kouri Tropical Medicine Institute based in Havana ensures the period in which the anti-retroviral therapies should be applied to improve the quality of life and survival of roughly 4,000 HIV carriers in Cuba

The Antibody and Experimental Bio-models Laboratories (LABEX) of the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba meet the domestic demand for three of those products, in conjunction with the Molecular Immunology Center in Havana.

Research chief Marlene Toledano asserted LABEX possesses the technology to produce the monoclonal antibodies Anti CD3, CD4 and CD8, which are specific to quantify lymphocytes and assess the immunological state of patients.

Although the AIDS rate prevalence in Cuba is the lowest of the American continent, health authorities implement a strong prevention system and ensure comprehensive medical care for all seropositive and sick people, while they search for vaccines with a therapeutic effect.

Presently, more than 40 million people are infected with AIDS in the world. Most of them lack the resources and medicines to stop the disease.
